Extracurricular activities can be a good way to showcase your abilities when you don’t have a lot of work experience – in particular, if you’re still a student or just graduated. In this case, recruiters can look to your curriculum for evidence of transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and work ethic.
This doesn’t mean that extracurricular activities are a substitute for relevant experience – but it’s a good place to start.
If you don’t have a lot of work experience, you should aim to demonstrate enough of the transferable and soft skills that hiring managers and recruiters are looking for in your extracurricular activities. To see if your extracurricular experiences score points are strong enough and have no bugs, upload your resume to the tool below – it will do a quick scan and let you know if your extracurricular experiences can be improved.
Here is a good example of a resume for a student or recent graduate showing extracurricular activities to good effect:

If you are heavily involved in extracurricular activities and want to showcase this, it is okay to have an entire section of your resume dedicated to it. Label them “Activities” or “Extracurricular Activities” and include the name of the organization, dates of participation, your role or title, and 1-2 of your most important accomplishments.
If your extracurricular activities are school clubs, they can go to the education section of your resume. For current students, your education section might be the most detailed section of your resume and could be at the top. You may also wish to include other information such as your major and relevant major (minor), awards, relevant coursework, study abroad, and GPA.
If you are a mid-level employee who graduated less than 10 years ago, you can still include extracurricular activities on your resume if they are particularly relevant and noteworthy. In this case, you should keep it brief by listing the extracurricular material on one line in a short tutorial section at the end of your resume.
If your extracurricular activities double as volunteer work, you can create a separate “volunteer” section on your resume. List each project or activity separately, including the dates you worked on it, and include two bullet points outlining your major accomplishments.
