Russia Cancels Restrictions Allowing Flights To And From The Czech Republic To Resume

It’s worth noting that at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, Russia imposed tough travel restrictions, many of which are still in effect, but have gradually expanded the list of nations considered safe to travel by air.

According to Russia’s coronavirus task team, the other nations Russia will resume flights with after April 9 include:

In response to Ukraine-related sanctions targeting the aviation sector, Russia has closed its airspace to aircraft from 36 nations, including all 27 members of the European Union. The punitive measures taken by Western governments have also resulted in Western companies terminating lease agreements with Russian airlines for more than 500 aircraft.

The restrictions also ban Russian airlines from buying aircraft components or maintenance services from Europe or the United States, adding to the strain on the world’s 11th-largest aviation market with a ban on using North American and European airspace.

Aeroflot had suspended its international scheduled flight operations on March 8 as aircraft rental companies – based in western countries like the US, Britain and Europe – had recalled their planes just as Russia began its war against Ukraine on February 24.

“Starting May 6, 2022, Aeroflot will fly its own Airbus 333 aircraft from Delhi (DEL) to Moscow (SVO) every Monday and Friday with a total of 293 seats in a three-class configuration – Business, Premium Economy and Economy. ‘ Aeroflot said in a statement on Thursday.

When Will Aeroflot Resume International Flights

After a two-month hiatus, Russian airline Aeroflot resumed flights between Moscow and Delhi on Thursday. The flights had been canceled as part of Russia’s suspension of international flights related to the Ukraine war, but the country has started to resume international flights in some sectors, including to India.

In a tweet, the Russian Embassy in India noted: “According to Aeroflot, the company will resume regular flights between Moscow and New Delhi from May 5, 2022. The airline will operate its Airbus A330 wide-body jet from Moscow to Delhi every Thursday and Sunday, while the return leg will be operated on Monday and Friday.

Effective March 8, Aeroflot canceled all of its international connections except Minsk in Belarus due to the restrictions imposed on Russia by Europe and the American nations, including limitations on the use of airspace and economic sanctions. One aspect of the economic sanctions was that European aircraft leasing companies began canceling contracts with Russian airlines and began reclaiming their planes.

Aeroflot’s cancellation of international flights was seen as a Russian move to prevent the leasing companies from retrieving their planes, especially given the Kremlin had signaled retaliation against European sanctions.

Russian Agency Urges Suspension Of Flights Abroad, Aeroflot Quickly Complies

Even as Aeroflot resumes operations in India, most westbound flights remain suspended amid sanctions from western countries. However, some international flights from Russia have resumed.

According to information from flight tracking portal Flightradar24, Aeroflot Group airline Rossiya started flights from Sochi to Istanbul last month. As of Friday, Aeroflot plans to resume its connection between Moscow and Istanbul.

On April 27, the airline resumed flights to Tehran, in addition to flights to some former USSR countries such as Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, which it had previously suspended.

Along with Turkey, India is one of the largest export markets for Russian arms. Turkey is a popular tourist hotspot for many Russian vacationers.

Aeroflot will operate two flights per week between Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) with an Airbus A330.

The other international flight goes to Antalya. The national carrier will also operate the A330 between Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) and Antalya for two weekly flights.

On March 8, Aeroflot halted all of its international flights except Minsk in Belarus as a result of restrictions imposed on Russia by Europe and the American nations, including restrictions on airspace use and economic sanctions.

Importantly, the airline also avoids impounding its leased aircraft abroad, which is a big reason why the airline has halted international operations.

Nevertheless, the airline is gradually resuming flights to “friendly countries”. According to flight tracking website Flightradar 24, Aeroflot Group’s leisure airline Rossiya started flights from Sochi to Istanbul.

Aeroflot also flew from Moscow to Colombo in April. But it looks like these flights are charter flights.

Russia Closes Airspace To Airlines From Eu Members, Canada

Keen-eyed plane spotters spotted two Aeroflot A350s exiting the camp from Marcel Dassault Airport (CHR) in Châteauroux-Centre. One was sent in earlier this year and the other in March, the height of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Where could these “new” travel destinations be located? The best guess is where Russian tourists vacation, like Bangkok, Phuket, Male, Hanoi, Bali, Seychelles, Dubai, Cairo and Mauritius.

Not long ago, Malaysian ambassador to Moscow Datuk Bala Chandran Tharman told Sputnik he hoped Aeroflot would reconsider direct flights between St. Petersburg or Moscow and Kuala Lumpur, but nothing materialized.

Will other Russian airlines follow suit? Airlines like S7 and Pobeda could open more routes, especially to “friendly” nations and former USSR states.

The Russian-led war in Ukraine will only mean prolonged delays for these airlines in resuming normal international operations. The EU’s aviation safety blacklist, updated on April 11, includes companies that are not allowed to operate in the EU because they do not meet international safety standards, the European Union said in a press release.

“The Russian Federal Aviation Administration has allowed Russian airlines to operate hundreds of foreign-owned aircraft without a valid certificate of airworthiness,” Transport Commissioner Adina Valean said in a statement.

“The affected Russian airlines knowingly did so in violation of relevant international safety standards. This … poses an immediate security threat,” she said.

After More Than 2 Year Suspension, Russia Resumes Flights To Cairo

EU airspace is already closed to almost all Russian planes due to sanctions imposed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

Valean said the decision was not another sanction against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, but a measure taken for technical and security reasons.

The commission said that after adding the 21 Russian airlines, the blacklist of EU airlines banned from EU air transport now includes 117 companies. The list includes airlines from Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Sudan.
