WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators said Monday they were satisfied with changes Boeing made in production of its 787 Dreamliner passenger jet, clearing the way for the company to resume deliveries.
Timeline: Boeing Delivers First 787 Dreamliner In More Than A Year
American Airlines said it expects to take delivery of its first new 787 in more than 15 months as early as Wednesday.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s announcement confirmed the report last month and came days after the agency’s acting chief met with safety inspectors overseeing Boeing.
The FAA said acting Administrator Billy Nolen wants to hear about steps Boeing has taken to resolve manufacturing problems and ensure freedom for Boeing employees working with regulators.
The mass production, two-aisle 787 was marred by a number of problems including gaps between carbon composite skin panels, and the use of unapproved titanium parts from suppliers in Italy. Those issues prevented Boeing from delivering any planes for most of the last two years, and about 120 have been grounded while Boeing tries to fix the production process.
U.s. Approves Boeing Inspection, Rework Plan To Resume 787 Deliveries
American Airlines was hit hard by the stoppage of deliveries. Earlier this year, it delayed several planned international flights because Boeing was unable to deliver planes on schedule.
American said on Monday that its newest 787 will come from Boeing’s factory in South Carolina and is expected to begin carrying passengers “in the next few weeks.” American said it will have 47 active 787s in its fleet, with another 42 on order.
Shares of Boeing Co., based in Arlington, Virginia, gained less than 1% on Monday after rising nearly 4% earlier in the trading session. According to US civil aviation authorities, manufacturers have made the necessary changes to ensure that the wide-body jet meets certification standards.
Boeing is expected to resume deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner widebody in the coming days, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US civil aviation authority, said on Monday.

According to the regulator, “Boeing has made the necessary changes to ensure the 787 Dreamliner meets all certification standards.”
Even so, the aircraft manufacturer will not have the autonomy to approve the aircraft ready for delivery to its customers. The FAA explained that it “will inspect each aircraft before a certificate of airworthiness is issued and cleared for delivery. We expect to resume in the next few days.”
The resumption of deliveries of Boeing’s main long-haul jet comes after 15 months. The last time the manufacturer delivered one of these aircraft to an airline was in May 2021.
At the time, Boeing had just resumed deliveries after a months-long suspension to fix problems on the assembly line.

According to Reuters, American Airlines will be the first customer to receive the 787 this month, which is expected next Wednesday.

Boeing handed the plane over to the airline on August 10 at the plane’s production facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.
The Fort Worth-based airline’s chief executive Robert Isom celebrated the event on Instagram: “This is an exciting day for American Airlines as we take delivery of our first Boeing 787-8 since April 2021.”

Stan Deal, chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, told employees in an internal note, “Resuming delivery of the [787] is a start. I expect more as we continue to focus on safety, quality and stability”.
After Faa Requests More Data, Boeing Halts 787 Deliveries Again
Earlier this week, the FAA said the Arlington, Virginia-based airline would resume deliveries of the beleaguered 787 Dreamliner “in the next few days,” without specifying a timeline.
The company has “made the necessary changes to ensure the 787 Dreamliner meets all certification standards,” the US aviation regulator said.
Last month, American hinted at a possible timeline, with executives telling analysts on the company’s quarterly earnings call that they expected Boeing to resume deliveries in the third quarter.
In addition to the nine 787-8s that will be deployed this year, American plans to receive four of the type in 2023, and 12 in 2024. American has 42 787s on order. Two airframes are expected to arrive with the airline as early as this month, Isom said.
Deliveries Of Boeing 787 May Not Resume Till October 2021
Boeing has not delivered the 787 for most of the last 21 months – since October 2020 – due to manufacturing quality issues that largely involve gaps between fuselage sections that are larger than specified. Boeing resumed briefly in 2021 before pausing again.
The halt in 787 deliveries comes as Boeing stops making the 787 at its main manufacturing facility in Everett, leaving the North Charleston, South Carolina facility as its sole production site for the wide-body aircraft.
The quality issue prompted a broad review by the Federal Aviation Administration, which has stepped up its regulatory oversight since receiving criticism for the 737 Max’s certification.
Boeing added on August 10 that the manufacturing issue does not cause “immediate concern” for the flight safety of the in-service fleet. In addition, airframes coming off the production line now do not require entry verification and post-production rework.

Boeing launched the Dreamliner program in 2004, and the first airframe entered revenue service in October 2011. Eighty customers from six continents have ordered nearly 1,500 787s, the company added. Boeing could resume deliveries of its best-selling widebody jet, the 787, to airlines within weeks with American Airlines among the first in line after more than a year of delays.
American expects the first two of 13 787s in August, Chief Financial Officer Derek Kerr said during the airline’s fourth-quarter earnings call Thursday. All of the planes were originally scheduled last year. The airline expects seven more planes to be delayed by December, and the remaining four in 2023.
Resuming 787 deliveries is good news for Boeing. The plane maker has largely been unable to deliver jet models to airlines since early 2021 due to manufacturing quality issues raised by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Those delays cost Boeing $3.5 billion in non-cash charges last year, and it expects an additional $2 billion — for at least $5.5 billion total — in overage charges through 2023.
