“How did you become a digital nomad?” This is a question that digital nomads face all the time. For many people with traditional office jobs, being a digital nomad seems like a very difficult thing to do. With remote work and digital nomadism on the rise, more and more people are wondering how they can become digital nomads.

We asked some of our members about their life as a digital nomad: what they do, how they started life on the road, and what their favorite part was. From passive income to starting their own business and working in remote companies, here are 8 members living the dream of digital nomads. Get ready to be inspired!

About six years ago, my position was eliminated from a retail store I ran. I was already writing resumes for my friends and family on the side. I decided to start a website for my resume writing job (John Hancock Resumes) and turn it into a full time job. Having my own job as a resume writer and coach allows me to work remotely from anywhere in the world (as long as I have good WiFi and mobile service).

Being a digital nomad was based on the flexibility of running my own business. I have always loved traveling and going on my first international trip to Peru when I was 14. My headquarters is in Kentucky, but I’m trying to embark on a new adventure where I work remotely every six to eight weeks. So far I have been able to work from Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Mexico, The Keys and Colombia.

I love the flexibility of being a digital nomad. If I want to go for a walk or spend time at the beach in the afternoon, I can schedule my client calls in the morning and work on emails at night. It’s also great to meet so many different people as a digital nomad with the same travel and remote working mindset.

I knew I had to start my own business, I felt it in my bones! While working full time I did some parts as a side job and then started running Chain Reaction full time. When I create content, I work remotely as it removes normal everyday distractions, and the change of scenery, people and events physically puts me in an inspiring space and activates my creativity.

I’d say I’m a partial digital nomad. My love for travel, adventure, and meeting like-minded connections inspired me to quit! I enjoy traveling alone and this allows me to integrate my personal life and interests with my work in the way I choose.

I graduated from law school and got a job/internship for the government right after college. It didn’t take me long to realize that sitting in a 9-5 office and seeing my future self there in an older colleague wasn’t really the goal I was trying to achieve. Not knowing how to change my job or career, I turned to the internet and Googled every remote job available under the sun. Then, the universe spoke from a Facebook ad (now I understand how it works) and the job found me.

I prefer to call myself a location-independent worker/consultant rather than a digital nomad. As soon as I got my first job (explained above) I decided to move – first to meet my teammates, then to travel and work at the same time. I took a slower approach than most: I was all over the place for 3 months before continuing. It helped me get an idea of the place as if I was living in a place, making friends and having routines… yet I never get bored of a place. I tried short-term work and travel, changing places every 2-3 weeks, and I realized that it really wasn’t for me. I get very stressed and chaotic. I think finding your own movement speed is an absolute priority. Do what is most comfortable for you and your schedule.

Freedom. It’s that simple. I can be wherever I want. I can stay as long as I want. I – along with every other remote worker I know – probably work more hours than a traditional office worker, but we make our own schedule and that’s it. I learn something new in every new place, meet someone new and try new foods. Constant innovation and learning is what excites me the most.

In 2010, I left my advertising sales position at CoxMedia and became a full-time entrepreneur. Around this time, I decided to build my van and started a blog called usasurftrip.com where I received unofficial sponsorship from GoPro and Billabong to create vlog content. I eventually stayed in my van for about four months and traveled 16,000 miles interviewing surfing, wakesurfing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing and Aquatics athletes all over the US.

After a short trip, I returned to West Palm Beach for the opportunity to consult with traditional ad agencies on digital media buying programs. I finally started my agency. Our team decided to invest early in apps that led to the development of a turntable DJ app for iPad called Mixr and a teleprompter app called Promtr (which for a time made it into the top 20 paid iPad apps). Time spent working in app development as a marketer and co-founder has been the source of my identity as a non-tech (tech) entrepreneur and, in a way, my life as a digital nomad.

This is probably a pretty standard answer, but my favorite part is experiencing people all over the world with their element. Thoreau has a beautiful quote that captures my feelings: “Can there be a greater miracle than to look into each other’s eyes for a moment?”

Luckily, I’ve always been able to manage my business online, so a physical office space was an overall unnecessary cost and, in reality, unnecessary.

While on vacation to Argentina, I realized that I was starting to take care of all my business, so I actually didn’t need a home base anymore either. It was simply overcoming fears of breaking traditional norms and believing that a simple nomadic life was a possibility.

My freedom and connections put me in a state of great productivity and flow. Being able to choose your climate is also a great bonus!

I started working remotely in 2015 while leading a team of executives who travel full time and serve as a task force to support hotels. As I began traveling frequently to meet onsite with them for performance reviews, feedback sessions, and relationship building, I realized that my permanent residence in Miami, my car, or any ‘things’ I bought were undervalued. They didn’t add much value to my life. Some call this the traps of materialism. When I ran out of renting cars and flats in 2016, I decided not to renovate either, put the few remaining things in storage and decided to travel full time, an alternative lifestyle.

How To Tell Your Story Of Resilience During A Global Pandemic

In early 2017, I consider myself a digital nomad while living in London and starting my own travel planning business. This was after 9 months traveling through Europe, Canada, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and Asia, and I wanted to help other travelers plan unique, offbeat itineraries and share local, authentic routes with them. experiences of my travels. When I returned to the US in late 2017, I began consulting with hotel and hospitality companies that were creating or tailoring their products and services for the “next generation” of travelers.

I have three. I think being able to travel alone is a very humble experience. It teaches you how humility and being vulnerable can make you a more open-minded, well-rounded individual as you open yourself up to embrace new experiences, cultures, foods, and languages. It teaches you to live consciously and that the world is not a threatening place. A passerby told me to think of his mind as a parachute – best to keep it open. There are countless people I’ve met in recent years and places that will be a part of me for the rest of my life. Second, the ability
