The first step in writing a resume is deciding which resume format to use. It depends on your work experience and skills.

Tip: Only include jobs related to the position you are applying for, so skip any previous vacancies that don’t fit. For example, include your previous job as a personal trainer or fitness instructor as this overlaps largely with a sports trainer.
Tip: If in doubt, choose Reverse Chronology CV format. For more information, check out our guide on How to Write Your Resume in Reverse Chronological Order.
In the case of a sports coach, hiring managers want to take a look at your resume and find out the following:
The best format for a sports coach is the Reverse Chronology CV format. This is because it shows your career trajectory – how you developed professionally and expanded your work experience and knowledge base. Check out our tips on How to Display Your Jobs on Your CV for more information.
How To Make Your Resume As User Centred As You Are
While this is certainly an optional section, the CV Summary is one of the best ways to be successful on this brief look.
The CV Summary is one or two sentences at the top of your paper that summarizes your entire CV. This is the punch line that makes a CV reviewer want to know more.
This is a bad CV summary because it is incredibly vague. It gives you no sense of who you are as a person or what sets you apart as a sports coach.
An enthusiastic track and field trainer with over 7 years of experience in helping athletes recover from overload injuries. Reduced recovery time by an average of 20% thanks to improved exercise techniques and close monitoring of the athlete’s progress. Former collegiate basketball player passionate about helping athletes achieve their performance and nutrition goals.

This is a good CV summary as it has details of what you are doing – you specialize in overload injuries. It also helps to stand out from other Trainers because you’ve added the achievement – you shorten the recovery time. Finally, we have a sense of YOU – you are a former basketball player, you are “enthusiastic” and “passionate”.

The next step in writing a resume is listing your work experience. This includes the name of your job (see Correct Way to List Job Titles on Your CV), the name of the place where you worked, and the time you worked.
Remember to use strong action verbs in each of the bullet points. Here are a few to get you started:

Tip: don’t start every bullet point with the same verb – it will get old quickly! Instead, mix it up a bit. If you use the same verb a lot (for example, “Design”), don’t put these points next to each other.
In addition, write your CV experience in a way that everyone in your industry will understand. Don’t use company language.
For example, suppose you were working in what calls sports tape “stretch tape.” Not everyone will know what this means, so it’s best to stick to a common name, otherwise the hiring manager may not know what you’re talking about, and if the manager is confused, they’re more likely to throw out your resume and move on to the next.
You should also quantify your CV whenever possible. This means adding a number – such as a dollar amount or percentage – to your achievements. Quantifying your CV gives the hiring manager a more concrete picture of your workplace performance. For example, suppose you “interviewed and hired 14 assistant coaches”, “reduced your recovery time by 20 percent through improved exercise techniques and closely monitored athletes’ progress”, or “saved your business $ 30,000 by investing in more powerful exercise equipment.”

Tip: One way to quantify your CV is to list your achievements and awards. They may come from your workplace (eg “Employee of the Month”) or in your industry (eg “Most Distinguished Sports Coach (MDAT)”).

Skills show the hiring manager what you can do for the company – without taking up too much space in the ‘work experience’ section of your resume.
There are two types of skills – soft and hard. Soft skills are those that are not tangible and reflect your personality more. Examples include leadership, problem solving, and communication. On the other hand, “hard” skills are those that are acquired in formal education. Examples include computer technology, programming languages, and certifications.

Sports coaches need a combination of soft and hard skills. While the crux of creating nutrition and fitness plans and diagnosing and treating an injury are certainly difficult skills, you also need soft skills such as patience and communication.
Tip: When completing this section on your resume, review the employers’ requirements. Try to include some of the language they use. For example, if your job description says you need someone who has “exceptional communication skills, good organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and in a team,” be sure to include some of these keywords. List “Communication” and “Organization” in the skills section.

Sports coaches must have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, although some employers may prefer master’s degrees. The selected program must also be accredited by the Sports Training Accreditation Committee (CAATE).

In addition, sports coaches must be licensed or certified by the state in which they practice. Please check with your state licensing or certification board or sports coaching association for specific requirements.
The Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) offers the standard certification exam that most states use to license sports coaches. Certification requires the completion of a CAATE accredited program and passing the BOC exam. To remain certified, sports coaches must adhere to BOC’s Professional Practice Standards and attend professional development courses.
