Update Resume On Ziprecruiter – When it comes to your job search, a good resume is not enough. Executive recruiter John Paul Engel joins us today to share specific advice on how to make a great resume, not just a great one.
A good resume is well written, has no errors and is formatted in a pleasing manner. A great resume is all of those things, but it also has bullet points that provide quantifiable accomplishments, starting with a summary that focuses on five bullets related to the job and what I want to see about the person in particular. For example a recent candidate worked with the Navy SEALs. Another received an award from the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. A third worked 3 jobs while going to school full time to finance the entire education. I want to find candidates for my clients who are determined to succeed and have achieved high levels of success.

You do a lot of executive level recruiting. Are there different policies or expectations for entry-level vs. executive-level resumes?
I look for people with clear career progression and success in their roles. They should increase their career with clear progress. I expect the executives to provide me with P&L related information related to their operations. How many lakhs did they save? What did they see as an increase in customer satisfaction or revenue? How many people did they manage? What is the size of the budget they manage?
What’s your top tip for job seekers who’ve got little or no bite on their resume?
People hire people, not pieces of paper or bytes. Make a list of 5 employers you want to work for and then use LinkedIn to find hiring managers. Offer to volunteer an hour at their favorite charity for every minute of their time, in return for 10 minutes of their time. Offer to take them out to lunch. Join an industry association by volunteering for any job until you can do the most work related to your career. The answer is always “no” if you don’t ask. If you ask enough people, someone will accept your invitation. I followed this advice 20 years ago and it landed me a job on the research staff of the Federal Reserve Board preparing briefing materials for then-Chairman Greenspan.

Don’t approach networking for what you can get but what you can give. One of my mentors was one of the four founders of Accenture. He taught me that the more you help other people, the better your life and your business will be. Focus on how you can serve others. The longer you are in service, the more opportunities open up to you. People who help people like to help. Always be willing to give time in the service of others.

While you can find many jobs applying on job search sites, networking is the best way to land a job. Hiring managers and employers consider referrals over other candidates because some trust factor has already been established. Employers save a lot of money when they don’t have to pay recruitment fees so that’s a double plus.
Reach out to your network and ask if anyone can refer you for a position. Remember that when you reach a few people, you are really reaching dozens or hundreds of people. This is because people know people, so reaching out to your network gives you an exponential amount of potential referrals.

Most employers call for an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to automatically screen resumes. When you apply for a job online, there is a 90%+ chance that your resume will be run through an applicant tracking system (ATS) resume parser.
The ATS software screens again to determine if they are a good match for the location. It looks for keywords, education, experience and other requirements for the position. About 75% of resumes are deleted at this stage; Many times this happens because the resume is not optimized properly.
To ensure your resume is optimized for ATS you need to use standard resume format, relevant keywords and avoid fancy images and designs.
For example, say a job posting requires knowledge of Excel. You want to make sure you have “Excel” listed on your resume because the ATS will likely be looking for that keyword.
