Amy Newman: I didn’t really go to school to be a teacher. I have a degree in health education. Back then it was called Community Health and I minored in English. I started my career working as a non-profit program coordinator and working with low-income schools in the district, and I fell in love with being in schools.

What we’ve tried to do with my initiative is to identify what we can do to help kids succeed in school, regardless of their background. I was interviewing a lot of teachers, kids, and families to see what their needs were, identify those needs, and try to connect them to programs that already existed in our district. So, I fell in love with it. I decided to get my teaching certificate and taught for 18 years.
I listened to your podcast and people talk on your podcast about being in the classroom and I don’t like all the other things that went with it. For the past few years I’ve thought, “I can’t really see myself retiring as a teacher,” and I don’t see myself transitioning into an administrative role. It didn’t sound like something I wanted to do.
So, I started asking my boss if I could do other jobs. Not really jobs that I was excited about, but thinking I could do something to work with teachers, teacher training, things like that. And there was nothing for me. Then, I was scrolling through Instagram and saw you on Instagram and signed up for the course that same day.
AMY NEWMAN: Because I thought, “This is great.” Also, starting to work through modules, I gained more and more confidence and thought I could do something outside the classroom. You’re used to day to day, “This is how I know how. Do it.”

Amy Newman: My routine is different every day. I said today was a slow day because it was the day before the holiday weekend. Generally, what my job looks like is that I support consultants working with executives in organizations. I can’t tell you the companies we work with, but they are big companies. We work with their management level team. The consultants I support provide training and development, coaching sessions, assessments and their core work is leadership development.
I support what the consultants are doing. I manage project trackers for each company, their meetings are scheduled and their estimates are completed. So, there are several checklists.
If you are someone who wants to look at a project and figure out what needs to be done and who needs to do it, it needs to be done in a specific timeline. If you’re that type of person who pays attention to detail and gets excited about checking off lists, this is the perfect job for you.
The interview process was very easy because while explaining what you do as a teacher in the classroom, you manage projects every day. So, it’s a beautiful transition from the classroom and the ability to be teachers.

Amy Newman: Yes. I remember being very nervous for the interview process. I had to do the assessments for them. I had three long interviews to go through, but they were all pretty easy. I felt like they were impressed when I told them what I did in my job. “You do all that?” Their jaws dropped. So, I felt like I was… I don’t want to say overqualified, but I felt like I could do this with my eyes closed.
So, all the anxiety I felt about that… I was scrolling through LinkedIn, looking for job sites, that kind of thing. The word escapes me. But then I would go through the job requirements and feel so inadequate, like, “I don’t know what any of these programs are, I don’t know what this means, there’s no way I can do this, I’m not qualified.”
