The What And Why Of Tableau — The Tableau Student Guide
U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of computer and information research scientists (including data analysts) is projected to grow 16 percent from 2018 to 2028. This is much faster than the average for other jobs!
Due to high demand and high pay, it makes sense that people flock to apply for data analyst jobs.
But that doesn’t mean you should be discouraged. Applying for jobs online can feel like applying into a black hole, and we know that’s awful. It took one of our founders 77 job applications before he landed his first data analyst job at Geico, making his next job much easier.
One problem with applying for data analytics roles is that these titles are not standardized across organizations. In one organization, data analysts may spend their time creating reports in tables, while in another, they may be writing machine learning models for production.
Applied To 200+ Jobs & Not Even 1 Interview. Am I Doing Anything Wrong? Ats?
Because of this variability, it can be difficult to include the right information in your data analysis resume. With this guide, you’ll put your best foot forward, no matter which data analyst roles you’re looking for!
First, you need to show the right skills for the job! This means that you should achieve two goals in the skills section of your data analyst application. First, you need to get past the automated key filters in the applicant tracking system (ATS) that companies use to filter applicants. Next, you need to demonstrate your technical skills to the person reviewing your application.
If you’re not sure which skills to include, we analyzed the data to find out which skills are most in demand by companies hiring data analysts.
These two goals are, unfortunately, often at odds with each other. If your goal is to get beyond ATS, you’ll list every skill to get your foot in the door:

The problem? This pattern is a huge red flag for technical hiring managers. You should only include skills that you feel comfortable discussing in your data analyst interview. Additionally, your skills section should take up no more than 20 percent of the page.
No reasonable employer would expect you to know SAS, R and Python. Instead, list the technical skills you’ve previously tagged. Also, avoid adding skills like “data mining” or “data analysis” because a technical hiring manager will know these, not just blanket terms. Instead of “data mining,” list the actual techniques you used, such as “decision trees” or “logistic regressions.”
But even when narrowing it down, sometimes your skills list can be cluttered and difficult to read. Never fear; There are many ways to organize your skills! For starters, you can list your skills with how skilled you are (“advanced” versus “advanced,” for example). Alternatively, you can list your skills by skill category. You can mention the years of experience you have with each tool.
For programming languages, specify the libraries and frameworks you use for data visualization and manipulation in that programming language.
Reasons To Learn Tableau
Most of the time, you don’t need to include a resume objective or resume summary, which is a mistake many data analysts make. If the resume summary or objective doesn’t add value to your application, it’s best to leave it out.
Why leave this out? It is unnecessary. Let’s say you’ve already demonstrated in your resume that you’ve used tools like Python and SQL to turn data into actionable insights. If so, your objective will not convey any new information to the person reviewing your application.
The resumes are similar, but are for candidates with more than 10 years of experience and include personal accomplishments. There isn’t much difference between a resume summary or an objective; You just need to know when to add them.
When a hiring manager reviews 50+ resumes for a given role, they quickly look for reasons to say “no.” By using these design tips, you make it easier for the hiring manager to see your value and ask you for an interview, and get you one step closer to landing the job.
Tableau Developer Salary For Beginners & Professionals
Of all the places where mistakes can be made, your contact information is the worst place to make a spelling mistake. One of our team members described his early days as a data analyst right out of college. When they were applying for jobs, they mistakenly wrote the wrong email address on their application for seven different positions.
Even if they are perfectly qualified for the role, there is no way to contact them because of a small mistake. So believe us when we say that you should triple check this section for any spelling, grammar or linking errors.
As part of your contact information, you should include your name and the role you’re applying for (even if it’s not your current role).
You don’t need to include your full address in this section, but you should list your city and zip code. If your employer prefers that method, you’ll also need your phone number.

Finally, include a link to your LinkedIn profile and anything else that can convey why you’re a great data analyst. If you have an active github, add a link to it. If you do multiple Kaggle competitions, add a link to your profile. Have a personal blog that talks about election data? Don’t forget to add a link.
If you’re an entry-level data analyst, looking for your first full-time role, including projects, is absolutely essential. However, the more work experience you gain, the less important those projects become. If you have four years of experience in this field, you should include only one project that you are most proud of.
What programs should you include? If you identify (or are given) a problem and you use data to come up with an answer to that problem. It doesn’t matter if it’s a class project, it’s even better if you take the initiative yourself.
If you don’t have any such plans, it’s time to work on some. Have a question you haven’t answered yet? An experiment you’ve been dying to try? Think of a way to collect and analyze data to satisfy your curiosity.

Here’s an example: One of our founders had similar jobs on major job boards (in fact, Glassdoor and LinkedIn) for data science roles. So, he collected the data manually, analyzed it and wrote about it to determine the best job board for data scientists.
The projects you include don’t have to be exhaustive or ground-level. Employers want to see that you can ask a question, use data to answer it, and present your findings in a fair and clear manner.
Your project section is an opportunity to provide additional context around the programming languages and libraries you listed in your “Skills” section.
As with the “projects” section, the education section of your application will be longer for entry-level data analysts compared to experienced data analysts. For entry-level data analysts you’ll want to include relevant courses you’ve taken in school related to data analytics.
Business Analyst Resume Samples
Courses related to data analytics are math, statistics, programming, and economics classes you’ve taken. To be an effective data analyst, you must apply the principles you learn in these classes to real-world problems and datasets.
Regardless of your experience level, you should always mention the school you attended, what you studied (including minors or certificates) and when you graduated. This will also be a place to list any boot camps or related online courses you may have taken in the field.
If your background is in academia, you can list any publications you have co-authored. Be sure to include the title of the magazine and a link to allow the hiring manager to read more if they are interested.
Only list your GPA on your resume – In general, only list your GPA if you’re entry-level and have anything above a 3.0.
Computer Skills: Definitions And Examples
You analyze data for a living, so you know the numbers count when the information comes in. So when talking about your work experience, your goal should be to highlight your accomplishments using numbers and ratings.
“Performed customer cohort analysis using SQL and Excel and recommended an email campaign to a customer segment”
When discussing your work, especially if it was a group project, emphasize your specific contributions. For example, you may have made a product recommendation based on previous analysis. You will love it
