When you have a run like he has — Kerr has been on the wrong side of .500 once in the last 35 years — he’s 11-17.
Kerr, who starred for the 33-49 Cleveland Cavaliers in 1991, looks set to suffer his first losing season in three decades as the injury-riddled Warriors enter the year. After five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, they lost Klay Thompson to a knee injury and Kevin Durant in free agency. Then, four games into this season, they lost Stephen Curry to an ankle injury. Starter Kevon Looney was also limited to 10 games, while rookie frontcourt star D’Angelo Russell missed 18 games.
Thompson will be reevaluated at the All-Star break, though there’s no reason to bring him back after the injury he suffered in last year’s Finals. Curry recently returned to the court for shooting practice, but he’s still there. The organization seems content with a high lottery pick in the draft if the losing streak continues.
It’s a smart plan under the circumstances, but it’s not easy — especially for someone like Kerr, who has won as a player, executive and coach.
Steve Kerr Was Pleasantly Surprised To Get A Congratulatory Text From Tiger Woods
It’s a new set of circumstances for Kerr, a disciple of Phil Jackson, and Gregg Popovich, an eight-time NBA champion as a player and coach. That forced him to lean on two of his assistants — Ron Adams and former Lakers coach Mike Brown — for advice on how to deal with losing with such frequency.
“They helped me understand the priorities in a season like this,” Kerr said Friday morning. “It’s in the details. This will help the younger players get better. It keeps the perspective, keeps the ship afloat. Don’t let anyone get too low.
“We have good energy here – good culture and good karma. I think our guys like coming to work and that’s really important. We try to maintain it, maintain it, and the work we’re doing… But it’s hard. We’ve got to win one now and then to make everyone feel good.”

Sometimes this resentment comes out. Kerr has been called for five technical fouls this season. Last week, he was fined $25,000 for “verbally abusing an official” and failing to appear on time after being arraigned.
“I can’t sit here and say everything was great and we’re all jumping for joy because the loss is so painful,” he said.
Some longtime employees expressed relief that they won’t be working until mid-June. One of the Warriors’ beat writers may end up planning an offseason wedding with a solid schedule. For an assistant coach like Jarron Collins, who is interviewing for his first head coaching job, working with a rebuilding team, even if it’s temporary, fills an important void on his resume.
It’s refreshing for a team that has reached the point of mental and physical exhaustion after five seasons as the NBA’s best team.
Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Opens Up On Draymond Green’s Benching, Expecting Nothing Less From Boston After Tying Series 2 2, And More
“It’s funny, watching Steve, I think he’s having a great time,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “To be honest, I’d rather wait for the championship. I’m sure Steve would tell you the same.’
You can hire Thompson as a sideline reporter overnight. When the Warriors are playing well, Curry is more vocal on the bench than anyone else. Draymond Green, one of the mainstays of their championship teams on the court, has earned rave reviews for his professionalism and mentorship this season.
“In terms of getting joy out of the game and cheering for each other’s accomplishments, that’s who our team has been the last five years,” Kerr said. “So when you see Steph jump on the sidelines to do something good for one of these young guys, it’s a reminder that the foundation that was built is still there.”
Kawhi Leonard had a dunk and a block in the final 1:16, and the Clippers rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Warriors 109-100.

In the meantime, the Warriors have been dumping minutes on young players and watching their first, second and third options look like seventh, eighth and ninth options next season.
The Warriors used a rotation of players in big roles that didn’t have to eat up minutes, from players like Damion Lee and Glenn Robinson III to kids who needed professional reps like Omari Spellman, Jordan Poole and Eric. Paschal. Ultimately, the hope is that they will replenish some of the depth eroded during their five trips to the Finals.
“All these guys are having their moments. And they’re going to be the lowest,” Kerr said. “It’s good for them to feel that, because that’s what the NBA is all about.”
Kerr likes to see fighters living the fantasy – constantly winning, collecting championship rings and setting records. This season, short on talent, has been that way for some teams.
