Selling Yourself In A Resume
Selling Yourself In A Resume – You’d like an engaging new job and – here’s the kicker – you want it in a whole new field. As a career coach, former tech recruiter and certified professional resume writer, I have helped over 500 job seekers update their resumes and jobs. (I also sat across the table as a hiring manager.) Most of the time, the people I work with want me to show them how to create materials that will help them change careers.
How can I help them to do this? Those of us who like resumes use the term transferable skills. In a nutshell, it’s a tactic that lets you
Selling Yourself In A Resume
It’s absolutely doable, but you have to be strategic about it. Selling yourself as an undeniable fit – especially when you don’t have the same experience as your competition – means explaining where you’ve been, based on where you want to go.
Keys To A Killer Resume (with Examples): Modern Resume Tips
The best way to understand this is to look at examples. So, I’m going to show you how to flip a sales resume so it works for positions in five other fields:
This is our starting point – the curriculum you would use if you stayed in sales. The job seeker leads with relevant experience and uses numbers and active verbs to show impact along the bullets.
Jumping from sales to an arguably more creative field like copywriting can be challenging, but both require warm communication skills and a “closer” mindset. Take any opportunity you can to outline ways in which you’ve sold through your writing.
While not advertisements or product descriptions, materials like phone scripts or pitch decks still count as content that sells. Check the same marker on both CVs:

In addition to your career timeline, use the header and skills sections to highlight content creation (and consider reversing the order, matching resume style). Ditto for your summary: make it clear up front that you know how to string words together to inspire action. (And yes, you will see summaries here, because career change is once an objective statement is definitely the way to go.)
Sure, marketing involves the same muscle memory as sales and writing, but what are you supposed to do when you have almost no formal experience and are competing with candidates who have been in the field for a while?
Well, after taking the time to describe anything you’ve done at work in terms of communication, social media, or audience reach; demonstrate how you gained marketing experience out of your nine to five life.
Develop a story around your community involvement or passion project. As you’ll see, I’ve traded the career top position for a volunteer experience section that expressly points to time spent on marketing and social media. That way, Cora’s resume remains the same size and only highlights what is most relevant.
Sales Representative Resume: Sample & Job Description
In operations, his professional value lies in his ability to organize teams, guide and improve processes and, most importantly, anticipate and manage change. Talking about goals, metrics, targets, and measuring performance will warm up your readers – and to show that you mean it, present clear evidence that you can do these things.
Were you the guy who guided your team through a period of unstable change? Talk about it! Did you anticipate and solve a serious business problem? Explain the benefits your resourcefulness has brought (and quantify them).
Your operations resume needs to show that you are a planner and problem solver in every move you make. For example, I added “Trained and integrated team of 3 sales coordinators recognized by the regional sales director as ‘exemplary’” to the second job in Cora’s operations curriculum, because training is an operational skill. Even small tweaks, like changing the first bullet verb from “manage” to “execute”, make it seem more suited to operations.
Sometimes it takes more than changing a few words to show employers that you have what they need. If you want to make a leap into the world of business intelligence, you should note that you have completed specialized training, which can range from a bachelor’s degree in computer science (OK, less likely if you are changing careers) to a certificate or program. in database technology and analysis (most likely and important nowadays).

Most of this magic will happen in your education section, but don’t forget to hone your skill list with a mention of the data management tools you know. In this release, I have added “System Analysis Certification” along with relevant courses.
Finally, look at your bookmarks and extract any hands-on experience you’ve gained in organizing, reviewing, and presenting important data. Even routine reports and recommendations can demonstrate your proficiency in identifying patterns and trends that are important in making business decisions.
Product management is another field that will require more than a little resume magic to get you in the door. Again, use your Education and Skills sections to introduce your newfound credentials and swing reach, tapping into field-specific language to show that you “get it.” So, in addition to listing an accelerated course, I also changed the following bullet:
Also, make sure you work in language around your ability to identify needs and build consensus (your Summary and Professional Experience section are key resources for this!).

Despite what some people may say, you are never stuck in the field you started out in. But there’s a vital trick to pivoting like no one before, and that’s being able to creatively articulate your value in a way your competition can’t. The way you tell your story makes all the difference.
Create a resume that shows you’re ready for the difficulties your new role can bring you. (Because, you are so totally).

Before impressing the recruiter with your vast sales experience, you need to choose the best format.
You’ll also want to highlight your main strengths, which depend on choosing the right format for your specific situation.
If you want to impress, the “reverse chronological” resume format is recommended. Essentially, it puts your most recent and notable strengths at the top, which allows the recruiter to see your worth in an instant. We recommend starting with this format.

While worrying, this fact highlights the importance of a resume that makes a big impact in the first few sentences.

Choosing a summary or objective will depend on your experience as a sales rep. Those with a strong background in the sales field should go with a resume resume, while those who have sales skills but no industry experience should choose a goal.
Simply put, the first statement is very vague. It shows that you were in charge of the sales, but it doesn’t say whether you actually sold something or not.
The second statement shows that you were able to sell A LOT, and consistently too. Hard numbers that prove your skills – I can’t argue with that!
Even if you don’t have an official sales rep position, that doesn’t mean you don’t have relevant experience or skills.

Unlike a candidate who sends a generic resume to all companies, a cover letter shows the hiring manager that you care about working for the company.
Work Experience On A Resume
It’s no secret that recruiters scroll through apps. As such, your opening paragraph should be immensely powerful. Use concise language to mention:
If you’ve combined your sales skills with the advice above, you must have successfully convinced the recruiter to grant you an interview.
