Those interested should mark their calendars for Wednesday, March 15 from 4 to 6 pm at the Allstate Campus, in the library. If you attend, you can expect us to cover the following topics:
Please feel free to contact our career specialist at (727) 302-6504 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns. Also, career services staff are available at each campus to assist you in the process of exploring your career, building your network, and assisting in your search for internships and employment. Cover letters are often requested as part of job applications, usually with resumes, and serve to help convince employers to offer you an interview. In many cases, the cover letter will serve as the “title” (or first page) of your application materials and as your first impression and introduction to your potential future employer. As part of that introduction, it also gives your readers a concise sense of why you’re interested in the position and why you’d be a good fit.
Because resumes and cover letters go hand in hand, it’s important to consider how they work together when an employer reviews your materials, which they will often do quickly, especially if they’re receiving dozens or hundreds of applications. It’s also important to be strategic here to avoid simply repeating what’s listed on your resume, rather than using your cover letter to highlight specific experiences and qualifications that are most relevant to the position you’re applying for. This may include summarizing major relevant achievements as well as demonstrating company-specific expertise. Finally, given the written and concise format of the cover letter, these documents also demonstrate your communication skills and provide a writing sample of sorts to your potential employer.
Cover letters consist of three main sections: introduction, body and conclusion. Cover letters also start with an address where you put your contact information, company address and salutation. They end with a closing, where you use “Sincerely” or “Regards,” sign your name, and print your name.
