Lee’s experiment also lends credence to the anecdotal stories that appear almost daily on Twitter, Reddit and elsewhere that accuse tech companies of bias against people with experience at elite institutions. Although almost all of the companies Lee tested claimed to have hiring practices that consider people with a range of backgrounds, there is a system clearly designed here that selects certain elements of a resume.
The most likely explanation for what happened here involves, of course, automation. Most companies use electronic tools that filter resumes based on keywords – in this case, those keywords probably include Microsoft, Instagram and UC Berkeley. While it’s slowly becoming common knowledge outside of the recruiting world, the average job applicant seems to assume that the recruiter at least read the resume that was successfully screened in the system. Given Lee’s experience, they clearly don’t.
“I don’t know on the recruiter’s side, maybe I’m completely ignorant, but it can’t be difficult to read a few bullets each,” said Lee. The last time he applied for an engineering job with an actual resume, he applied for nearly 300 jobs, got about 3% of the interviews he applied for and ended up choosing between two job offers.

They’re not focused on hiring people living in active war zones or in countries barraged by floods. Dalton and Libin want to find those people and pay them according to a standardized global rate.

Hating Your Job Is Cool. But Is It A Labor Movement?
This idea became the basis of Sora Union, a new startup from All Turtles. Sora means “sky” in Japanese, and “labor union” is meant to signify togetherness (Sora is not a labor union). Dalton isn’t planning a launch anytime soon. But the founders decided to kick off Sora Union in March after Russia invaded Ukraine, focusing on hiring Ukrainian workers. They have started expanding to other populations as well, with workers in Brazil, Egypt and Nigeria, for example. So far, Sora Union offers two services to companies: localization, translating materials for companies that want to enter the country’s market, and design, which speaks for itself. Design prices start at $65 per hour. Sora leaders also hope to improve the skills of their employees through English classes and other technical courses, paving the way for more customers.
“People either move with the economy or without the economy, and it’s a hell of a lot easier if they move with a stable income,” said Dalton.
Sophia Wajnert, co-founder and chief people officer at Sora, declined to offer a specific salary, but said Sora pays all employees the same monthly rate, regardless of location or client contract.
