New Grad Physician Assistant Resume

New Grad Physician Assistant Resume – Creating your first resume as a recent or new PA student can be simple and straightforward. Sure, you don’t have a lot of experience to include, but that shouldn’t stop you from creating a professional-looking resume.

Filtering information and determining what is and isn’t important is a PA’s primary job in practice. Showing a potential employer that you can do this will create a good first impression.

As a new student, Education should be your first priority. Here, you’ll list your degrees (including the pending PA degree if you’re close to grad), the institutions that offered it, and graduation dates. You can include your master’s thesis topic with your PA degree information.

Do not include any education or training that does not count toward a degree, such as a CNA certification or prerequisites.

Don’t include your GPA, it doesn’t matter (gasp). I heard. People who interview and hire new PAs (like me) are fully aware of the average GPA of PA students (currently 3.58). Unless you’re blowing this out of the water, listing your GPA doesn’t do you any good.

Second, PA schools’ calculation of GPAs is more variable than undergrad. My GPA for PA school was 0.00. Sincerely. My system was pass/fail where you got a 90 or higher or you were out.

Employers care that you attended PA school, can pass the PANCE, and are eligible for a state license, not your GPA. Additionally, including your GPA at the beginning of your resume (where it will naturally go) reminds employers that you don’t have a lot of experience. You don’t want them to be distracted by this thought while you try to win them over with your resume.

The next section of your resume should be Clinical Experience, where you briefly list your clinical rotations. This is a review section that I often miss. Avoid adding unnecessary clinical rotation details in an effort to enhance your resume. Those who read your resume will wonder why you think it’s relevant or think you didn’t bother to edit your resume on the site.

Here, you have the opportunity to tailor your resume to a specific position. If you had a rotation in the specialty you are applying for, expand it. If you don’t have experience in a specialty, you can highlight relevant skills from another rotation or two. For example, if you’re applying for a dermatology position, you could expand like this:

You should change this section accordingly when applying for new positions, making sure each change highlights your skills for that position. If you don’t have cycles matching the position, just save it as an array.

In this section, include your NCCPA and license information, or state that they are pending. You can include your PA association or AAPA membership information here, as well as any CPR or ACLS certification. Membership is not required, so don’t feel obligated to join a PA organization in order to be listed here.

This is where you provide 3 (and only 3) professional references. Don’t put “available upon request.” This makes the employer think that you have to scramble to find three people who are willing to vouch for you.

If you are including additional sections beyond what is required, consider shortening your Clinical Experience section further to keep your resume on one page.

If you have professional experience other than previous PA work (CNA, EMT, etc.), list it here (or add it to your Medical Experience section). If you have had a previous job, it can help explain any gaps in education and highlight your ability to work effectively with others.

Related to that particular position – you were a CNA in a hospice and you are applying for a health care position.

Include this section only if you have a formal publication (in a medical journal) or report (at a medical conference). Most people won’t have this section, so don’t sweat leaving it on your resume.

You should only involve the volunteer sector when your efforts are substantial. If you’ve volunteered for a few 5K races, give it a go. If you have many different experiences, pick 3 and list them. This section should not be larger than other relevant sections.

Include this section only if you have more than one award. You promised us “prizes” in the header, so there should be more than one. Changing the title to “medal” will make it look lonely and strange.

This should include only PA-school items. Making the dean’s list or being summa cum laude in undergrad may not be included in your field of study.

Do you know a second language well enough to communicate with, teach, and consent to patients? If so, create a section and tune it. If not, the employer does not need to know about it.

You don’t need any objective section. Someone with a marketing degree may want to state that they are looking for a digital marketing position, but having a PA degree and looking for a PA position is more self-explanatory. Your resume will be placed somewhere in the “experience” section, so an objective is not necessary.

The skills section is completely unnecessary. We will assume that you can perform H&P, provide patient care, and make treatment decisions. Additional skills are not required.

Please, don’t do it. You can go into them during the interview if it comes up. But especially as a new grad, adding them will appear as an attempt to “clean up” the resume.

As a new graduate, your resume should be no more than one page (without borders or font size manipulation). If you’re having trouble keeping it to one page, take a step back and ask yourself if each element of your content is concise and relevant. Be sure to save it as a PDF file so that your formatting remains consistent once you import it.

Most new students will have 4-6 sections covered. Don’t feel compelled to include additional sections if it feels like a stretch. A well-written, concise resume that’s well-edited does more than just fill a page.
