Active duty lasts six years. Candidates must apply for four years and at the same time sign a contract to extend their engagement for 24 months in order to accommodate the additional training involved.

Personnel selected for nuclear training enter the Navy at the pay grade of E-3. Accelerated advancement to pay grade E-4 is permitted after personnel complete all requirements for advancement in rate (including minimum time in rate) and “A” school, provided eligibility in the NF program is maintained.

Enlistment and reenlistment bonuses are available in addition to Navy pay, special duty pay, and food and lodging allowances. Those who volunteer and are selected to serve on nuclear submarines (males only) are entitled to additional incentive pay for submarine duty from the day they complete nuclear training.

Three Navy job specialties, called “grades,” are included in the NF community: Machinist’s Mate (MM), Electrician’s Mate (EM), and Electronics Technician (ET). The grade in which the candidate is trained for NF is determined in the Recruit Training Center (boot camp).

MMs, EMs, and ETs who are trained in nuclear power perform duties at nuclear power plants that operate reactor control systems, propulsion, and power generation. The character of NF jobs is mentally stimulating and offers career development. NF provides opportunities for close cooperation with experts in the nuclear, technological and engineering fields.

The educational options available to a nuclear-trained sailor range from college-level courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering, and thermodynamics to nuclear engineering training in nuclear power plant design, construction, instrumentation, and operation. The American Council on Education (ACE) has acknowledged the comprehensive nature and unsurpassed quality of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion training program by recommending up to 77 semester hours of college credit.

After recruit training, NF candidates report to the NF “A” School in Charleston, SC for technical training in their particular ratings. They then attend the Nuclear Power School (NPS) in Charleston, SC, where they learn the theory and practical applications of nuclear physics and reactor engineering. After NPS, candidates begin prototype training in their rating specialty at one of two Nuclear Power Training Units (NPTU). After nuclear power training, NF Sailers are appointed as nuclear power plant operators. They can be assigned to modern nuclear-powered aircraft carriers or volunteer for submarine service (male only).
