My, oh my! I can’t express enough how important it is to have a resume composed solely for each lab opportunity you plan to apply for. I’ll share some suggestions on what lab professionals should have on their resume to catch the attention of potential employers or recruiters, increasing the chances of job offers.
Lab Technician Resume Examples Of 2022
It all starts with preparing a basic resume. a complete and original collection of information that describes, in sections, relevant information about your professional. Keep it short. Entry-level resumes with more than 1 or 2 pages tend to be overlooked.
The sections are: Contact Details, Objective, Profile, Education, Summary of Lab Qualifications, Work Experience, Professional Memberships/Awards and References.
Create your basic resume with an objective and profile for a Generalist Med Tech. This version of your CV can be used for any job application. The Education by Reference sections will likely remain the same for any version of your CV, but will only change as you progress in education, work experience, qualifications or additional memberships and awards.
The Objective and Profile sections should be reworded to emphasize to recruiters and employers that you have what they need as described in their job opportunity.

Make sure the “Objective” section reflects the needs described in the job posting. This catering is a perfection of words. Every job description has hints of what employers really need, and your resume can’t be “one size fits all.” If you’re serious about a particular job, then it’s worth the time and effort to tailor your CV to suit.
The “Goal” section will give you a chance to tell recruiters and employers what you’re looking for in a job, and they might be able to give you what you want.
Whenever the situation presents itself, you can change or add to the Goal section any specific need that interests you.
Need hours from 7am-3pm? Looking for a position as a generalist? Does it have to be full time? Are you flexible with the distance if the compensation is worth the drive? Do you want to be a microbiologist? Do you only need to work on the weekend so you have time to further your education?

Use this section to let them know. It is very important to be upfront about your needs, but be careful with your choice of words.
If you enjoy working in a blood bank, but the position you are applying for is for a general practitioner, it is fine to mention in the objective section that you are looking for a general practitioner position with a blood bank opportunity.
It will let them know that you can do what they need but would also like something else. Don’t be surprised if you are offered a general job with the opportunity to train in the blood bank and the future possibility of becoming a dedicated blood banker.
Pay attention to the job description and the company you are applying for. A company that produces chemistry reagents will not be able to satisfy your desire to work as a blood banker. In this case, just use the generic version of your resume.

In general, an entry-level general clinical lab job description will ask for an AS or BS degree, certification, and possibly 1 year of general lab experience. Technicians are expected to work under the supervision of the manager, perform tests, require independent judgment and critical thinking, maintain acceptable accuracy, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing, use clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret and report laboratory data.
Clinicians typically require approximately 6 months of full-time work in a learning environment within the laboratory environment and should count as experience. The fact is that you have experienced months of clinical laboratory workflow shadowing an experienced practitioner and therefore have no idea about the workflow in a medical laboratory. This experience should be detailed in the Laboratory Qualifications and/or Work Experience sections.
In the Profile section you will state that you are 1) a team player, 2) able to work under minimal supervision, and 3) fully compliant with procedures and regulations.
This Profile section should not be too long, but should be worded to convey directly to the recruiter/employer that you can confidently do what you have stated. Use this section to describe any other skills you have that would be useful in a lab/hospital/research/reference lab setting. These skills could include computer program expertise, language proficiency, or LIS (laboratory information system) user experience.

Consider this scenario: you work side by side with the same colleagues 5 days a week, 8 hours a day for years and years. People come from different places, with different backgrounds and different personalities. It is very important for management that you can work in a civil environment with your colleagues. There will be disagreements. It’s how you handle them that will make you a team player or not. Managers want people who work well together. They need employees who can let personal differences pass as they move forward in the lab. Keep your pet’s appetites under control and contact management or human resources if an interpersonal problem occurs that could compromise patient safety or become a nuisance.
Not being people-oriented is a common misconception among lab professionals. We ask each other questions about testing all the time. Friendships are developed and socializing often occurs in the form of birthday parties, Workshop Week events and fundraisers, for example.
Outside the laboratory, while working, most physicians have constant interaction with the patient and depend on collaboration with other departments to complete their tasks. While at the bench, lab professionals work independently with minimal supervision.
An example would be when you get an abnormal test result and have to deal with it yourself. Investigate, check patient history, open procedure book, check QC validation. You will wonder if this is a true abnormal result or if there is a problem with the organ, traumatic effusion, IV infection, etc. that make your exam difficult.

Another example, a nurse calls you to add a test to a sample collected 2 hours ago. You should be able to probe and respond to the nurse if this is possible. Can this test be performed on the previous sample tube? Is the sample too old? Can you spot the sample? Situations like this can occur on an hourly basis depending on how busy the lab is and you are expected to handle these frequent incidents yourself with minimal supervision.
Acquiring this troubleshooting skill will come with experience. As a new professional, you are expected to use critical thinking before reaching out. Remember that lives are at stake and you should never speculate. If you are unsure after research and critical thinking, consult an experienced colleague or your supervisor.
It means exactly what it says. Make it clear that even though you are a new Med Tech graduate, you understand and will always follow the procedures and regulations. You may later see some professionals make adjustments to standard operating procedures. You do not.

Unit work experience is an essential part of your medical laboratory resume. It’s the one thing the recruiter really cares about and pays the most attention to.
This section, however, is not simply a list of the past responsibilities of the medical laboratory scientist. It is intended to present you as a sound candidate, showcasing your relevant achievements, and should be tailored specifically to the specific medical laboratory scientist position for which you are applying. The work experience section should be a detailed summary of your last 3 or 4 positions.
Make sure you make education a priority on your medical lab resume. If you’ve been working for a few years and have a few solid posts to show for it, put your training after your medical lab experience. For example, if you have a PhD in Neuroscience and a Masters in the same field, just list your PhD. In addition to the doctorate, there are the master’s degrees, then the Bachelor’s and finally the Associate’s.
