Entry Level Software Engineer Resume—sample And Tips
Creating a resume is a pain for most job seekers. We’ll break down each point here for clarity to make the process smooth for you. That’s exactly what this article is about.
The first step in every job application is a resume. A resume is nothing more than a way to market yourself to a recruiter. It’s just the equivalent of saying “Hey, here’s everything I have and have done. And I’m awesome.” But that’s what the average resume does and fails miserably. A good resume should be a clear, concise and very structured document that shows why you are right for the job you are applying for.

Most job postings receive 100 resumes. So what do you think a recruiter goes through every resume they receive? No. Most recruiters use an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) whose first task is to evaluate resumes based on their content.

Once your resume clears the ATS barrier, it goes into the hands of a recruiter who scans your resume for a few seconds. That’s it. Just a few seconds. So our goal here is to create a resume that first passes the ATS barrier and then impresses the recruiter. And then you will most likely get a call from them.
Below is a sample Machine Learning resume that we will discuss. We’d suggest following along and building your own resume by reading. The first and most important thing to remember when creating a resume, and the mistake that 8/10 people make when creating their resume, is that your resume should not be longer than one page.
Making your resume 2 or even 3 pages unnecessary will in no way increase your chances of getting a call. Did you win the race in 7th standard? The recruiter is not interested. The whole idea here is to only include relevant information.
The above template is pretty good and tested. However, you can always make a template of your choice. You can also add/remove sections as it suits your profile and experience. The only thing to remember is that the simpler the better. Let’s go through each section one by one.
How To Write A Machine Learning Resume: 2022 Guide With 10+ Examples
A resume isn’t really necessary if you don’t have any professional experience. The sole purpose of a resume is to tell the recruiter about your background in 1 or 2 lines. If you are a fresher and don’t have any professional experience, you can skip this one. You can include it even if you have internship experience.
A major mistake that most applicants make is adding unnecessary adjectives to the resume. For example:
“Highly motivated professional with a proven track record in machine learning. A hardworking, purposeful and proactive person. I am a team player who is a problem solver and possesses leadership skills. Looking for a challenging role to showcase my skills and grow.”
This summary is not at all what a recruiter wants to see first on your resume. And the sad truth is, that’s what most resumes have. Using adjectives like “highly motivated,” “team player,” etc. won’t make your resume stand out. That only makes it redundant and wastes important space. The summary section should talk about how much experience you have, what key skills you have and what kind of roles you are looking for.

This section should contain your phone number, email address and current city where you live. DO NOT include your full address before your PIN. The recruiter has no interest in it. Keep location details limited to city or state at most.
Remember, we will only include relevant information. Try to put a professional looking email address and not something that might give a bad impression to the recruiter. Create a new one if you don’t already have one. You will use it for the rest of your life.
Post your LinkedIn profile after customizing the link. Only add your GitHub profile if it has a large amount of projects and activity. Adding a Git link with no or very little activity will leave a bad impression. Post any other relevant links, such as your blog or website.
This is the most important part of your resume and the core if you are an experienced professional. Include relevant work experience using action verbs. Keep the points short and don’t put too much information. If you are fresher and have no work experience, add relevant internship experience.

If you don’t even have that, then skip this section and go to the next section and make it the centerpiece of your resume. Follow the writing style used in the template above. To check how well your resume is worded, visit resumeworded.com.
This section should include 1 to 3 good machine learning projects you’ve done recently. Write about them briefly and include the most important details. Do not include beginner level projects such as Titanic, Forecasting House Prices, etc. Adding them won’t make your resume stand out. If you are a fresher or if you do not have relevant work experience, this section should be the core of your resume. Move it up and add enough content by doing some very cool projects.
The skills section should include all the machine learning skills you have, be it algorithms, tools, and languages. A great way to make sure your resume clears the ATS is to add the exact keywords listed in the JD of the job you’re applying for. This is because the ATS scores resumes based on the number of matches between JD and your resume keywords.
So change the skills a bit by replacing the words used in JD. For example, Linear Regression should be changed to Linear Models if JD has it. Try to include as many keywords as possible, but don’t include ones you don’t know about.

This is an optional section and can be skipped. You can also add another section that you want to show the recruiter. Avoid adding your certifications from a MOOC as they don’t add much weight to a resume. Add only relevant certifications. For example, Microsoft Certified Azure Specialist, etc.
The education section should be kept at the bottom if you are an experienced professional. If you just graduated from college or are still in college, you can keep it much higher. This section should only include your graduation details – degree, college/university and grade obtained/CGPA.
