As the old saying goes, brevity is the soul. The same seems to be true for resumes.
A one-page resume is fine, but in some situations, job seekers can handle it. However, Smith says that this comprehensive resume should be “no more than two pages and be relevant to the position you are applying for.”
Taking pride in past work is a good thing in general, but job seekers shouldn’t mention everything they’ve done.

“Don’t keep information on your resume from last year,” says Smith. “If you’re applying for a job in finance, don’t include that retail position you held seven years ago.”
Job candidates who show employers that they can deliver good results generally gain a competitive advantage.
He continued, “These should be hard facts and figures, such as, ‘During my three years at X, I have supported the company through strategic X to achieve its goal of increasing turnover to X.'”

Job seekers who want to move to a different industry must demonstrate how they will fit into the role they want.
“If you’re moving industries, add information about your transferable skills and how relevant they are to the industry you’re in,” says Smith.
There’s only so much that can fit on a resume, which is why Smith recommends removing all irrelevant and redundant information.
For example, “having ‘references available on request’ is not required because most companies already consider this and require references from previous companies,” says Smith.

While some job seekers may want to show a little personality on their resume, Smith points out that a resume should focus on relevant career history.
“Other than [providing] information about volunteering for the local community, etc., there’s no need to include information about your personal life,” Smith said. “They don’t need to know that you like to go to the gym or cook.”
“There is no need to include a headshot on your resume. This can open the door to companies that focus more on what you look like than relevant experience and skills,” says Smith.
In some creative or general roles, employers may require a headshot, according to Indeed, an American employment and workplace website. If the employer asks for a photo, it is acceptable to provide one.

Professional resume and cover letter builder Zety says job seekers should make their resumes easy to read.
This includes using neat font styles such as Cambria, Calibri, Helvetica and Bookman Old Style, and sticking to a readable 10-point or 12-point size. Choosing between serif and sans-serif fonts is up to the individual, but Zety recommends job seekers stick to one font to keep documents consistent.

As for spacing, Zety says resume makers can use double spaces before and after the title and between the work experience entry and the education section. The rest of the resume can be left in single space or 1.15-line space. Margins must be the same on all four sides and can range between half an inch and one inch, depending on how much space is needed.

“Locked-in professions” in employment fields such as law, medicine, civil service, finance and administration may not seem to like bright colors, according to Resume Genius. Black, gray and white are safe colors.
However, in some cases, deep colors like navy blue, burgundy or dark green may be “acceptable” when used in a “simple resume template.”
Creative job fields in design, marketing, web development, art and media typically have more color options, according to Resume Genius. When done right, color can draw attention to a specific part of a resume or the creativity of a job seeker.
In some cases, people can use color to represent the company’s brand, which often shows the “spirit” and compatibility of job candidates.

Resume Lab’s resume and cover letter writing guide says job seekers should format their resumes in a way that highlights their “highest strengths and accomplishments.”
For section headings, Resume Lab recommends starting with contact information and following with a summary or objective before working on work experience, education and skills. Other areas to consider include courses, certifications, publications and conferences.
The Resume Lab also recommends listing your work and educational experiences using reverse chronological order. This means that the most recent job and school titles are listed at the top while previous jobs or schools are referenced in descending order.
