As the old saying goes, brevity is the soul of wit. The same is apparently true for resumes.
One-page resumes are ideal, but in some circumstances, a job seeker can overcome this. However, Smith said these extended resumes “should be no longer than two pages and should be relevant to the position you are applying for.”

“Don’t keep information on your resume from years ago,” Smith said. “If you’re applying for a job in finance, don’t include the retail position you held seven years ago.”
Job seekers who demonstrate to employers that they are capable of delivering favorable results usually gain a competitive advantage.

She continued: “It should be in hard facts and figures, such as: ‘During my three years at X, I supported the company through strategic X to achieve its goal of increasing its turnover to X.'”
Job seekers looking to move to another industry will need to demonstrate how well they are suited to the role they want.
“If you’re moving industries, include information about your transferable skills and how they’re relevant to the industry you’re moving into,” Smith said.
There’s only so much you can fit on a resume, so Smith recommends removing all irrelevant and redundant information.
This Is What Your Job Resume Should Look Like In 2022
For example, “having ‘references available upon request’ is not necessary because most companies already assume that and will need a reference from your previous company,” Smith said.
While some job seekers might want to show a bit of personality on a resume, Smith reiterated that resumes should focus on relevant professional history.
“Other than [providing] information about volunteering for your local community, etc., there is no need to include information about your personal life,” Smith said. “They don’t need to know you like to go to the gym or cook.”
“There’s no need to include a headshot on your resume. This can open the door to companies focusing more on how you look than your relevant experience and skills,” Smith said.
In some creative or public-facing roles, an employer may require a head shot, according to Indeed, a U.S. employment and job board website. If the employer requests a photo, it is acceptable to provide one.
Providing a link to a LinkedIn profile or business card could potentially work as an alternative, according to Indeed.

Professional resume and cover letter creator Zeta said job seekers should make their resumes as easy to read as possible.
This includes using elegant font styles such as Cambria, Calibri, Helvetica and Bookman Old Style and keeping them at a readable 10 or 12 point size. The choice between serif and sans serif is up to the individual, but Zety recommends that job applicants use one font to keep the document consistent.

For spacing, Zeta said resume writers can use double spaces before and after headings and between work experience entries and education sections. The rest of the CV can be single-spaced or 1.15-spaced. The margins should be the same on all four sides and can range between half an inch and one inch, depending on how much space you need.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE REJECTED FOR A JOB: 6 QUESTIONS TO ASK AND HOW TO KNOW THEM
Resume Genius said that the color of a resume ultimately depends on the industry the job seeker is in.
“Powered professions” in work fields such as law, medicine, civil service, finance and administration may not look bright, according to Resume Genius. Black, gray and white are safe colors.
However, in some cases, rich colors such as dark blue, burgundy, or dark green may be “acceptable” when used on a “simple resume template.”
According to Resume Genius, creative fields in design, marketing, web development, art, and media typically have more room for color choices. When done right, color can highlight certain sections of a resume or the creativity of a job seeker.
In some cases, one can use color to mirror the company’s brand, which often shows a job seeker’s “enthusiasm” and compatibility.
Resume Lab’s guide to writing resumes and cover letters said job seekers should format their resumes to highlight their “best strengths and accomplishments.”
For section headings, Resume Lab recommends starting with contact information followed by a summary or objective before working on work experience, education and skills. Other sections worth considering include courses, certifications, publications and conferences.
Resume Lab also recommends listing work experience and education in reverse chronological order. This means that the most recent job and school are listed at the top, while previous jobs or schools are listed in descending order.
The source notes that “strategic use of bullet points” can help restore creators “save space” and convey their “message succinctly.”
