International Update Your Resume Month – Did you know September is International Update Your Resume Month? Launched by Career Directors International in 2000, this month is the perfect time to revisit your resume and see if it matches what today’s recruiters and employers are looking for. If you haven’t updated your resume in a few years, chances are it’s a little behind current standards. And even if you’re not looking for a new job right now, having a ready-to-go resume in your arsenal is useful in case that big opportunity presents itself.
Most job seekers use a standard resume format that focuses on skills or responsibilities in each role. These types of resumes usually include several bullet points listing those skills and tasks. Unfortunately, a “death by bullet” approach will make you less marketable to future employers.

While what you did in each role is an important part of your resume in 2021, skills are not the primary component you want to highlight on your resume. These days, your best bet is to focus on your accomplishments and how you’ve added value to your positions.

In other words, there was a challenge you faced, an action you took to overcome that challenge, and then a result that came out of that action.
If you have an old resume, you have an objective on top of it. Objectives are common in skill-based resume formats and are redundant in differentiating yourself. So, if you have an objective, it’s definitely time to update your resume to today’s standards!
Instead of an objective, add a title or heading that describes the location you’re looking for. Just below that, create a summary, where you answer the question, “Why should I hire you?” Focus on key skills that only you can bring to the position as opposed to your personality traits. How have you added value to other companies in the past? What kind of leader are you? What are the results you can deliver? Overall, you want to share how your specific experience directly translates to the requirements for this job.
A resume is often called a branding statement because its goal is to brand you to the employer. Therefore, you need to sell yourself here. After all, it’s the first thing employers read!

If you’re looking for a new job, you need an updated resume. Fortunately, the library can help. Our new resource, Gail Peterson’s Career Prep, is a one-stop database for your job search needs. It offers resume templates, career and job search, education and training information, and job search advice.
Once you are in the database, click Register to create an account. This will allow you to save your work. When you return, choose Login and enter the username and password you created.
Click the Create link in the resume box, choose the style you like, and you’re off to a new, formatted resume. There is also an option to upload a resume that you have already created in Microsoft Word. Once your resume is in Peterson’s Career Prep, it will be saved in the database. You will be able to turn it on the next time you log in. You can download your resume as a Word document or .pdf.

If you have a resume and just need to make some updates, you can do it in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. If your resume is saved as a .pdf, you won’t be able to change it unless you convert it to Word. Please note that the converted .pdf is not always easy to work with.
Save a copy of your resume in Microsoft Word or Google Docs so you can edit it later. If you use Google Docs, you can view and edit your resume from any computer with Internet access. If you create your resume in Microsoft Word, save it to a flash drive or email yourself a copy. Resumes saved on library computers will be deleted when the computer is restarted. This could be a free teleclass, webinar or workshop. This can be virtual and handled by yourself or it can be local where you go to a larger organization to use their name, visibility, and awareness in the community. That could be a community center, college, school, church, or business. Be sure to spread the word with free ads in small newspapers, social media, and press releases. Definitely plan to ping back your company and services at the end! You can offer a free drawing to get names on your list!

Holidays make a great launching pad for offering your expert advice. There are many articles and blog posts you could write on this topic, using UYRM as your inspiration.
Not everyone needs to do blog posts and articles to create awareness or funnel new traffic to their websites. Consider doing a “30 Day” tip series with Twitter-sized advice. It’s very easy to go up-and-down through a resume and find shiny nuggets to share. Once you’ve offered valuable information, don’t forget every 4-5 tips to post about your free consultation. “Need help with your resume?…”, “Take advantage of our free resume critique…”.
First of all, you know I must always emphasize the importance of accurate pricing before you offer any kind of incentive. Driving new or repeat business to your company will not be effective if you do so at a rate that causes you more stress. So, make sure the prices are adjusted to higher retail rates before trying a discount or special! I did this once several years ago and ended up with a TV interview as a result. While you’re tempted to go big with big news outlets, don’t overlook smaller organizations either. A small local paper may have shorter lead times than an online global organization. Don’t be afraid to expand your reach!
