How Long Does It Take To Write A Resume
How Long Does It Take To Write A Resume – A number of people have asked me how long it took to write my book, and how much time was spent on the actual writing. Fortunately I thought it would be interesting to know that myself, so I recorded my time since the project started. Thanks to Peter Maddox for helping me turn my dry figures into beautiful graphics!
The follow-up period begins in mid-May 2011, when I began preparing the book in earnest. I stopped tracking my period in mid-February 2012, when the book became available on Amazon and B&N. The figures include work I have done myself. Other people spend a lot of time in books. Specifically, Richard Hamilton at XML Press did the copy editing and publishing of the book, an artist did the layout and five illustrations for the book’s chapters, and six people worked on the technical review. It would be nice to know how long we all spent, but I don’t have that information.

Assuming a 5-day week of 8 hours per day, 620 hours would take 16 weeks. That’s about 4 months. I did it all while holding down a full-time job – a fun and challenging job, indeed. Now, I spend all weekends, all holidays, and a few days of annual leave, on books. Looking back, I don’t know how I managed it, except that I have a wonderful family that supported me the whole way. And it was worth it!
This table shows the number of hours spent per week, for each activity. The vertical line indicates the number of hours. The horizontal line shows the nine-month period, from May 2011 to mid-February 2012. The colors indicate the different jobs, with the color-coded keys running across the chart.
I aggregated the hours per week, because that seems like a reasonable limit and makes a good chart. (Daily charts are interesting but very slippery. Monthly charts are not descriptive enough.)
There is more information about each type of job. I’ve rounded the numbers to the nearest hour in this list:

I kept coming back to the unfinished manuscript, reading it over and over again, and then going on, adding a few thousand words before I had to put the manuscript back together. Life continued to save.
, I vowed to keep writing detailed information about my progress. I created a blank page, and in the first column I wrote every date I sat down at my computer to work on the novel. I explained whether I was presenting, planning (in which case I wrote in the word count) or editing. And since the book had three stories, set in the past, present and future, I added extra columns to keep the word count in each time period. After finishing the first draft of Chapter 1, I decided I deserved a new column called ‘Steps.’

Several years of art are not listed in the inventory. But once I met the deadline and submitted my book to 47North, I went back to my book and counted the days I spent in China and Italy researching this book.
I started the sketch on May 12, 2014, the day after I got home from China. I emailed the manuscript to my editor, Jason Kirk, on April 20, 2015.
It took me 222 days of presentation, planning, and editing to complete the manuscript, which was approximately 70,000,000 words. I added my research days in China and Italy, and took a 5-day work week (actually, my work week varied from three days to seven days a week), it took me exactly 52 weeks to write my book.
You will see from the screenshots that my output was very good for a few days. However, I found that the parts I wrote quickly were the ones that needed the most corrections. This brings me to…
Why Does It Take So Long To Write A Book?
I can’t really explain this. I always edit as I go instead of writing a complete post for every book. In other words, as I go, I’ll edit the previous paragraph, my morning routine, my first day routine, and so on until the episode is finished. On my page, I found this to-to-hoof editing.
How long does it take to write a book? Well, now I know how long it takes! Here is a screenshot of the first 50 days. I count 60 words on July 17th which is my low point, but I see I worked on the outline, that day.
It has a fragmented nature, with time shifting, partly on the head, from the future to the past. I re-edited after every third episode to make sure the pace was comparable to the three story lines. I also checked for themes/themes/motifs, which I wanted to weave into the details. I’ve saved two more pages (I don’t like whiteboards and Post-its, though I’m sure other writers find them helpful):
I started my project with a very rough plan, and as I went through the manuscript, I summarized the events of each chapter – four or five chapters at most – for easy reference in the future.

In addition, when I got to the middle of the manuscript, I stopped to wash everything I had written so far. Many writers may find this crazy. However, I felt that I needed to feel confident about the novel so far before adding the already connected stories.
I continued with the second part of the book, repeating the editing process I used in the first part. By the time I finished the last chapter, I was ready to wipe out the entire book.
So many writers do! And this only emphasizes how each writer has his own style that is determined by his personal preferences and depends on the nature of the writing project.
Although this first book had a relatively uncomplicated line in many ways. But I was a visitor and when I got to ‘The End,’ I realized that my manuscript needed more than a final polish! For example, I changed the beginning of the book twice before I felt ready to submit it.
