The name “career center” tells you everything you need to know. What better resource could there be at FSU than its career center staff? Everyone at the center greets you kindly. The staff will sit down with you and discuss any work-related issues you may have. If you don’t know how to write a CV, they will teach you. If you’re struggling to write a great cover letter, head over to the Career Center. You can also participate in mock interviews with career center staff so you don’t freeze up every time you think about the big interview coming up. “If a student doesn’t know where to start or is stuck, we can help them,” said Erica Stallings, program director of the FSU Career Center. The Career Center provides all the help you need, from having no idea what you want to do, to having that job in mind but not knowing how to get it.

Want to know what students in your position usually do? Talk to your primary advisor to find out what to do now and how it will help you in the future. If you’ve heard that someone in your major had a great internship abroad, talk to your advisor about how to make that a reality. The counselors will teach you how to dip your toes in the warm beach water on your days off. They’ve dealt with hundreds of students just like you, so they have a good sense of the best jobs for you. “Guiding a student through this process gives students the opportunity to learn how to find the opportunities that are best for them… [By showing them how] to go through the job search and selection process again [if] their circumstances, interests, and skill sets change for any reason,” said Cathy Barrios, assistant director of experiential learning and career relations in FSU’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Indecision and exploration go hand in hand. Both will help you find the perfect job for you. It helps you narrow down not only how you want to live, but also what kind of person you are. Best of all, research advisors know exactly what classes you should take to get there. The word “alumni” sometimes brings fear to us little bachelors. It seems that they actually live together. Don’t be afraid to talk to alumni anymore. Check out ProfessioNole Mentors, a special program at FSU that connects you with alumni to start a discussion and build a relationship. You will be blown away by the amazing advice they can offer you. ProfessioNole mentors know that the job they have chosen is really right for them. They also understand that everyone comes from the same place. Since the mentors are alumni of the great FSU, you already have a connection with them. Also, don’t worry about annoying alumni when you approach them. They are always helping other Seminoles. Visit the FSU Alumni Association and connect with alumni for more information about what they’re doing or advice on how to secure your salary after you graduate.
You know you want to become a chemical engineer, but you don’t know how to meet the companies you dream of hiring. Experience a great way to network with a variety of potential bosses at any FSU career fair. If you are interested in becoming a chemical engineer, visit the STEM Career Fair. Is political science more your style? Visit the Government and Social Sciences Career Fair to learn more about companies interested in students like you. One great aspect of any career fair held at FSU is that you can access a list of all the employers attending the fair before it happens. This gives you the opportunity to do some research beforehand. You can also apply directly on the website. “A career counselor at the career center can help prepare your resume for uploading and is ready to apply for the opportunities and experiences you’ll find at Handshake,” Stallings added.
Better to get advice from people your own age? Search for organizations on campus that you can easily contact through Nole Central. Whether you search for clubs, Greek life, or religious organizations, all of these will help you in the long run. Try your hand at networking and see what opportunities other students have taken advantage of in your position. “Our sisters always encourage each other to apply for previous paid volunteer experience or work opportunities that would benefit us,” said Theta Nu Xi member Arielle Vabre. Greek life is a great way to learn what you should do when you talk to others. “On top of that, we have great relationships with alumni who are always willing to help our sisters professionally and often encourage us to apply for jobs at the companies they work for or tell us about great job opportunities. Vabre added. Check out any club on campus for lasting friendships and career opportunities.
We all have that one professor that really stands out as your favorite. Talk to them for career advice. The professors know you better than anyone else on this list, and they’re not afraid to tell you what they see. Sometimes we all need that honest advice. Don’t forget about letters of recommendation. If you don’t need them for work, you will in high school. “I see my role as trying to encourage students to develop a mindset that is critical of what it means to have a job or a career and to give them the opportunity to pursue careers that help them get the most out of life,” said FSU English. You find yourself in the awkward position of not being qualified enough for an undergraduate job, but wanting work experience. You may not know it, but people specifically dedicated to advising internships exist on campus through the InternFSU program. Most students lack an internship without knowing how to secure one. Lucky for you, InternFSU advisors have helped you with every internship under the sun and can help you figure out what to say on your application. They’ll even give you tips on how to prepare for an interview and what pieces of your portfolio to submit as work samples. An internship doesn’t automatically equate to a job, but it definitely helps you get there.
