Be wary of people who claim to “help” you while building a business model where their financial incentive is to sell more products, services, and sessions before you receive that “help.” Writing a resume doesn’t have to be complicated. Your resume should be simple, to the point, and end with a clear statement of why you are the best fit for the job.
I started this blog to help people find their path in life – from finding your passion to getting a better job. Read my story here.
If you sent your resume and didn’t get a response, it’s not your fault. The school will teach you how to write a resume if you applied in 1974, and most online help consists of resume software companies trying to get you to use their service.

Writing a resume doesn’t have to be complicated. Your CV should be simple, to the point and clearly communicate why you are the best fit for the job. If you follow this idea, your resume will pass the ATS filters.
Before you begin, remember that you need to tailor and personalize your resume for each job you apply for. This means reading the job description and seeing how you can reflect it on your resume. This can be as simple as taking keywords from the job description and using them in your CV where appropriate.
Think of this article as explaining how you will write your “general” resume. A general resume will score 80%. The last 20% will be when you find a job you want to apply for. Then make a copy of your general resume and tailor it to the job you’re applying for.
TLDR: Your resume should be simple, clean, and modern. Most people only need an Experience, Education and Skills section.

Many people ask, “Can I have a two-page resume?” The short answer is no. I’ve seen people with 2-page resumes, but these are highly experienced professionals applying for jobs they know give them a competitive advantage.
If you don’t have a lot of experience and you feel that there is a lot of competition for the positions you applied for, then your CV should only be one page.
The Templates You’ve Been Asking For
TLDR: Creating a professional summary is optional and won’t bother you, but it can add context to your resume if you want to explain something.
You may be wondering if you need a professional summary. You can really go either way on this one. I’ve never used it and I’ve done absolutely fine. Although as I gain more experience, I might add one next time I’m looking for a job.
A professional summary can help you add a little more context and personality to your resume. You can also do this in your professional summary if there is a specific area you want to get into or a niche you want them to be aware of.
The David Paykin template has a template that you can model yours off of. I took the personal summary from that resume and turned it into the template below. You can write it with this. If you want your personal summary to be longer or have more to say, you can copy the template a second time and add more details.

When I review someone’s resume, they often don’t have a clear idea of what they actually did in their job. I’ll see vague statements like “Answered phones and emails” or “Maintained documents and spreadsheets.”
If you answered the phones, what did you accomplish during the phone calls? If it’s easier, you can list your tasks first and then turn them into results. So if you worked in customer service, you could list your duties as follows:
See how much more there is inside “Received phone calls and emails”? You can refer to any of the resume templates linked earlier to see examples of the experience section.
The best resumes are lists of accomplishments. The worst resumes are just a job description with someone’s name at the top.
Tips For Negotiating Your First Job Offer (and Every One After That!)
If you attended only a few colleges and did not earn a degree, list the year(s) you attended. For example,
If you did something else during college, maybe you were president of a club, or you had a particularly high GPA that you think is relevant to the job you’re applying for, you can list that under your main heading. . See the education section of this template for an example.
If you have little or no education (or experience), I recommend taking LinkedIn Learning courses related to the job you’re applying for. You will receive a certificate for each course, which you can include in your CV. For example, if you’re applying for customer service jobs, search for “customer service” and pick a few.
TLDR: List your general skills (writing, project management, graphic design) and specific skills (Google Docs, HTML/CSS, Photoshop), then pick the ~10 most relevant to the job you’re applying for and post them. CV.
The Only Resume Guide You Need (free Templates Included)
In this article, I’ll go into detail about the Skills section, but you really only need to think about your general and specific skills.
Generic skills are things like project management, customer service, sales, data analysis or communication. They are generic because they are not tied to any specific technology, device or operation.
The graphic design is Adobe Photoshop. Data analysis is a general skill, while Excel or SQL is a specialized skill.
You can list a combination of general and specific skills that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for, but you’ll want to lean mostly on specific skills because they’re more specific.
