Be sure to make education a priority for your truck driver resume. If you’ve worked for a few years and have some strong positions to show for it, put your education after your driver and truck experience. For example, if you have a PhD in neuroscience and a master’s in the same field, simply list your PhD. In addition to the doctorate, Master’s degrees follow, followed by Bachelor’s degrees and finally Associate’s degrees.
These are the four additional pieces of information you should mention when listing your education on your resume.
When listing the skills of your truck driver resume, remember to always be honest about your skill level. Include the Skills section after the experience.

Let’s look at the truck driver resume for people in the trucking industry. One is just starting out, another has been on the road for a while, and the third is a truck driver looking to trade the keys for the next step: a management position in the logistics industry.
First up is Barbara. She is a newly certified commercial driver looking to trade her local delivery experience (pizza and packages) for larger loads.
Fresh out of Indianapolis Institute of Trucking with a clean driving record and a CDL, looking for a job as a long haul truck driver.

Here, Barbara is looking to break into the world of heavy duty truck driving. She has completed the necessary training program and obtained her CDL license, but she doesn’t actually have much experience driving a truck long distances. So she chooses the skills-based resume format, where skills and qualifications are the star, followed by relevant experience. it
Have experience as a driver, but more locally. So her bullets are short and sweet, and she sticks to her point to emphasize the skills that will serve her well as a commercial truck driver: customer service, GPS and route planning savvy, and on-time deliveries. /correct.
Then there’s Phil, who has been a driver for over 15 years but is updating his resume to capture new driving opportunities for more money.
CDL licensed driver with over 15 years experience · Clean driving record · Proficient in navigation · Good people skills · Safety oriented · Committed to timely and efficient deliveries · In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations

Phil’s strength is his experience – he’s been a driver for a long time and wants to highlight that enduring history. So his summary is basically a headline of what he wants to highlight: his track record of safe and on-time delivery; and his long record of good service. And while education is important to include (which he does at the end), it’s important for a truck driver to show the licenses and certifications that Phil has, so he puts this information up at the top so that be one of the first things the reader sees.
Phil then dives into his experience, using reverse-chronological format. It seems that his current and previous jobs were quite similar, but he doesn’t just repeat the dots. He finds different ways to phrase the skills and tasks involved, and makes sure he’s highlighting the qualities he’s presented in his summary.
Then there’s Owen, who is an experienced driver but wants to move into a more administrative and managerial role.
Experienced trucking and transportation professional looking to leverage road experience, efficiency focus and strong organizational skills in a supervisory logistics role. 10+ years of field experience coordinating and delivering large shipments.
How To Write A Resume
While Phil’s resume is a straight portrait of an experienced truck driver, Owen (who has similar experience and skill sets) is trying to position his resume a little differently, as he’s going for a slightly different type of job. . Note that in his summary, Owen does not use the word “driver” at all. That’s not to say he’s ashamed of his previous experience or job titles, just that he wants the reader to see him more as a general logistics and shipping guy. The summary (or objective) is a great way to set the tone for the rest of your resume.
Set the tone and start painting the picture of your career that you want the hiring manager to see. Like Phil, Owen emphasizes his experience, but also leans heavily on the expertise angle.
Because Owen is essentially changing careers (in spirit, if not changing industries) by moving tracks within the trucking and logistics field, he’s using the functional format that works well for career changers or people who want to highlight the skills they bring on experience. That means he’s front-loading his resume with skills and education, highlighting the qualities he brings to the table. Remember: always tailor your CV to the job you’re applying for, which means this skills section should be tailored to match what the job description requires. And because Owen wants to show himself as a potential great administrator, he includes his educational background up front, as it includes a degree in Business Administration.
, in that exact order. Templates can be a great guide and a good way to help you get your information in fighting shape, but when it comes to structuring your resume, make sure it’s conveying what you want.
