Beef Up Your Resume

Beef Up Your Resume – Hello friends! Today I want to share a little bit of my story that got me to where I am today. I got my first bachelor’s degree in mass communication in 2012, and I’ll be the first to tell you that my GPA was less than stellar (2.9 to be exact). I chose this major during my sophomore year after asking my advisor at the time which major would get me out the fastest. I didn’t have a career path in mind, and I was more concerned about getting a full-time job than getting good grades. The mantra is, “Cs graduate.” …yes.

Fast forward to 2015 – I decided I wanted to become an SLP. After years of research, I knew that getting into a speech-language pathology program would not be easy. I also knew that my 2.9 GPA wasn’t going to cut it. But I’m a fighter and if I want something, I’ll do it. I am willing to do the work to achieve your goals.

I chose to go ahead and get my second bachelor’s degree instead of doing a bridge program at the decision of my new advisor in communication sciences and pathology. He told me that by doing this, the high school admissions committee would see my overall GPA including both grades (which was low even after I took all of my courses at CSD.. .I believe it ended up around 3.2) AND the CSD GPA (which was 3.93). He said this would make me a better candidate for admission to grad school – is that true? I have no idea, to be honest. But I will say, I’m glad I went that route, because it gave me an extra year to do something to help me stand out as a candidate.

I applied to 6 graduate programs and was accepted to all 6 (I was accepted off the waitlist but still). How? I worked hard to improve my resume over the next year.

There are 3 things I really looked into to make myself the best candidate possible, because of my low GPA.

I approached a local children’s hospital and spent a few months volunteering there for a few hours a week. I did things like clean toys, organized playrooms, took care of patients and their families to make sure they were as comfortable as possible, etc. I knew that after high school I wanted to work with children so that’s why I volunteered. children’s hospital. If you know which population you want to work with after high school, I recommend volunteering with that population! Try to choose a place and really use your time to volunteer there. It will help you build strong relationships that will come in handy later down the road (aka offer letters).

I would say this is the most important thing and what made me an outstanding candidate in the programs I applied to. This one takes more time and planning, but if you’re willing to put in the work, it will pay off.

Cashier Resume Example & Writing Guide [for 2022]

The summer between my junior and senior years as a CSD major, I took an elective called “Direct Research.” In order to register for this class, I had to find a professor who is willing to a) Bring along a current research project that they are working on or b) Generally plan a research project that I want to do it. I went with option A and found a professor who was working on a research project on stuttering. I worked with him over the summer, entering and analyzing data. Sounds boring but I learned a lot AND our research was turned into a poster presentation that was presented at the 5th Joint Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the Acoustical Society of Japan in November 2016 … just in time for of high school applications. So I can officially put “research authorship” on my resume. Talk about boosting your resume!

For me it was the most fun of the three. I looked into a few schools and private practices. I searched and found a local SLP who works with the pediatric population and practices animal therapy…or my dream job. I emailed him about a year before submitting my graduate application and spent a LOT of time over the next year watching him. Not only did I gain valuable experience and knowledge, but she is the actual SLP who will be working as an SLPA starting this August…big win! At the time I submitted my grad school application I had about 40 hours (I work full time so keep in mind this was accumulated over the course of a year).

All of these things will not only improve your resume, but give you great experience to write about in your cover letter/personal statement and help you build relationships that will come in handy when it comes time to apply for a letter. the presentation.
