Today you will learn precisely how to hack your resume when trying to turn it into an investment banking resume with no experience. under your belt

These tricks are exactly what we teach our students when they think they lack the relevant experience needed to get more investment banking or top-notch job interviews.

And while you might think it’s because you have an investment banking resume with no experience, it really comes down to these three main reasons:

Simple but surprisingly common. Students don’t always understand what their templates should look like and who can blame them. No one is teaching these things. So they put together an ugly hodgepodge of work experience and think it’s good enough to land an investment banking interview. Oh!

If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, here’s the gist: This is a really ugly resume template for investment banking.

Because if you’re applying for an entry-level financial analyst job, they know your skills. They know your summary. No need to put that on top.

Okay, we can continue, but let’s take a breather. It is a disaster. Enough talk. Again, this is why you really, really, really want to make sure you have the right investment banking resume template when you’re doing this.

Never apply online for a job if you don’t have the right template. Because you go for results. And ugly resumes don’t get them. Weakness number two: superfluity. That’s it…

Have you ever been on the short end of the one-sided talking stick? Get old fast. Wandering is a cardinal sin because time is money. Now, take that concept and multiply it by a gajillion (give or take).

Your investment banking resume is one in a thousand. The HR manager has to disqualify as many resumes as he can, as fast as he can, in order to get to the top applicants. That is, the candidates who appear to have the strongest track record; the most relevant and highest quality work experience.

Again, when you are in school or recently out of school, your resume should be one page. Here’s a solid example of what NOT to do.

Associate Investment Banking Resume

This resume looks a bit more organized and has things in the right order. But sadly, it will still be discarded 99% of the time because it’s too long.

Let’s be honest. As a student or recent graduate, you have little or no investment banking experience. If your resume is two pages long, you’re doing something wrong. It doesn’t look well formatted and looks like it was rushed. So, again, your resume should always be a single page, clean, and well-organized.

Pro Tip: Later on, you will become a seasoned veteran of your craft. So two pages makes more sense. Less than 3 years? One page. More than 3 years of experience? Two pages may be required.

This is a big one. Many students screw this up. Let’s take a look at this example.

They got the school up. The GPA looks great. ACT score, SAT math too, looks good. It also has a pretty good structure, of having work experience, listing a bunch of things, and then extracurriculars, and then some additional information at the top.

For example, the first thing on the resume under work experience is something called The Water Coolest. I’m not sure what that is, but apparently it has to do with social media. How is that relevant to the jobs you are applying for?

Below are some internships that are a bit more relevant, but this person hid some of the best credentials too far down the resume. Put your best foot forward. That is, list your best credentials as high up as possible while maintaining proper structure.

Now that we’ve covered the weaknesses to avoid, let’s dive into the details of how to create your highly effective investment banking resume, despite having little or no experience. I call it the “Spin & Shine Technique”.

Associate Investment Banking Resume

This is a really great way to take experience, internships, or activities you’ve done, spin it around, make it shine, and make it seem a lot more relevant and a lot more analytical.

That way, when you apply for these different types of jobs (be it investment banking, asset management, private equity, or any type of tier 1 job for that matter) you’re going to get the experience and things you need to have seen. much more relevant and much better on your resume.

First, identify activities and internships you’ve been involved in, which you can spin and shine to appear much more relevant and much more analytical.

Next, you want to ignore all the boring administrative stuff you may have done at work. Instead, focus and highlight analytical and somewhat relevant things that you could have done in your internship or within the activities in the school.

This is a fairly common problem that I see many students have, where they have done internships or have done activities in school, especially when they are younger; maybe 90% of the time what they did was administrative, boring, and not relevant to anything at all.

But maybe 10% of the time they really did do some great things that may have been analytical or much more relevant to the kinds of jobs they really want. You want to ignore 90% of the nonsense you had to do in the internship and only focus on that 10% while writing your resume.

Last but not least, be specific. When you’re rolling around and shining in your internships and the activities you’ve been involved in, be really specific about the things you did.

Let’s say you’re a sophomore or junior and you ended up working for this real estate investment company or something. Maybe a family friend got you and honestly most of the summer you were just doing a bunch of boring clerical work for a portfolio manager or something.

Or just a little. BUT, maybe 10% of the time you were actually doing a great job. Let’s see what bullets we have here.

Investment Banking Resume Template & Guide [20 Examples]

All right, a couple of things here. One, we changed the title. This is another thing I see students doing a lot. They put a title for their internship that looks… well… awful. Before this we had an administrative intern, right? That does not sound good. You need to exaggerate, just a little, to say what you did.

We went from an administrative intern to a real estate investment intern. It just sounds so much better. Take a look at these three secondary vignettes that I added here.

Now let’s take a look at the next two bullet points. Remember, the general idea here is that we want to focus on the top 10% of the cool, analytical things we did. We want to exaggerate a bit. Make it look like your internship gave you valuable work experience.

You may have to exaggerate a bit here. But you must present at least one deal or investment or something you contributed to during the internship that we can highlight on your banking resume, using a secondary bullet point like this.

For example, let’s say you were able to provide some information about a $10 million commercial real estate construction deal that the company was investigating. That looks a little better, right?

Now when someone is looking at your investment banking resume, this is going to stand out, this whole section here because it’s a sub-bullet, it’s specific. And specifically relevant: it is the type of work experience they are looking for.

I see a real estate investment intern here, all of a sudden this is going to be right in the middle. I’m going to think, “Wow, they actually worked out a deal. They
